The Crystal Peak Trail is an easy hike, with stellar views. It used to be maintained by volunteers but has been left abandoned since the fire lookout was removed in the 1970s. You’ll cross a sturdy bridge over Crystal Creek to reach the lake. As you climb, the trail becomes steeper, with some switchbacks along the way.
The Verdi Lumber Company operated a sawmill in this region in the late 1860s. This lumber company provided products to the local area and to various mines in the area. This is the reason Crystal Peak Park is located on former Verdi Lumber Company land. The company had a large sawmill, an engine house, and large lumber storage facilities. The building was also converted into a resort for Highway 40 travelers. The ruins of these buildings still stand.
